As lovers of the wines of the Northern Rhone, our Pride Mountain Vineyards winemaking team, composed of Steve Pride, Associate Winemaker Romel Rivera, Enologist Margaux Lacoste and myself, strives to enhance the complex floral, spicy and meaty flavors that are typical of this variety at its most distinctive. The 2015 displays complex flavors of blueberry compote, anise seed, rubbed sage, verbena, mint, grapefruit and subtle smoke. The texture is round and luscious with a lengthy finish. The wine team is unanimous in ranking the 2015 as one of our best Syrahs ever.

Farmed with an emphasis on ultra-low yields, our three blocks of syrah are micro-monitored during the pre-harvest period when flavors can change quickly for this grape variety. Cofermented with 3% viognier grapes both in stainless steel and in some open-top, whole-cluster vessels, our syrah is then aged for 15 months in completely neutral oak barrels (used at least twice previously). To enhance complexity, the syrah is only racked twice during the aging period and is always bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    The 2015 Syrah is fresh, delineated and full of nuance. Medium in body and gracious, with striking aromatic lift, the 2015 is fabulous. The inclusion of 25-30% whole clusters helps to give the Syrah a level of aromatic freshness and lift that is hugely appealing, especially in this vintage, where so many wines are overly heavy. A burst of sweet red cherry, pomegranate and rose petal punctuates the finish in this compelling Syrah from Pride.

    Medium-dark to dark purplish ruby color; attractive, deep, ripe, intense, peppery, blueberry and boysenberry fruit aroma with hints of anise and mocha; full body; big, tight, youthful, meaty, berry fruit flavors with well integrated oak; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Nicely balanced and structured for bottle aging, though also enjoyable now. Very highly recommended. 14.6% alcohol; 958 cases; blended with 3% Viognier; released April 2017.     Aged only in neutral oak, this bold, lushly concentrated wine is big in blueberry, with a savage feral component of compost and sage. The smoky oak and tannin are intensely intertwined, while a back note of dried herb recalls the Old Wold.
