2023 Syrah

A cool, wet spring followed by a moderate, even summer set the stage for this stunning 2023 Syrah.  Dense aromas of blackberry and boysenberry entwine with lovely expressions of violet, sweet marjoram, cinder and forest floor.  With time in the mouth, the fruit acquires an opulent expression of ripe plum that is enhanced by classic syrah notes of black pepper, dried flowers and subtle smoke.  The supple tannins build gradually to create a seamless, full-bodied wine experience.  Achieving this balance of fruit with savory freshness and power with elegance is what we strive for with our Syrah and speaks to the quality of our 2023 grapes.

Perfumed and dark-fruited aromas of black olives, black currants, ink, dried Provencal herbs and licorice. The palate shows fine, firm yet integrated tannins, a plush mid-palate and bright acidity that leaves a savory, earthy feel with plenty of nerviness and focus. 5% whole-cluster fermented. Drink or hold.

This Syrah is quite beautiful. Three acres of north-facing vines are planted on the property, and the wine lifts from the glass with pure, delineated aromas of rosemary, thyme, and sage. It’s layered with exceptionally pretty, high-toned aromatics, and those savoury herbal notes carry through to the palate alongside cocoa nibs, subtle white truffle and charcuterie nuances, and delicate violets on the lengthy, lightly white-peppered finish. Gorgeously medium-bodied and elegant.

I loved the 2023 Syrah, a bright, juicy, classic Syrah that brings to mind a mix of a California Syrah with a kiss of Côte Rôtie. Red, blue, and black fruits, spring flowers, pepper, and gamey nuances all shine here, and it's medium-bodied, has a round, layered mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. Based on 95% Syrah, 3% Viognier, and 2% Grenache, with 10% whole cluster and aged 14 months in neutral French oak, it's beautifully done and I'd be thrilled to have a bottle on the dinner table. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years. Drink 2026-2038.

The 2023 Syrah is bold and punchy. A rush of dark cherry fruit, black pepper, sage, mint and rosemary makes a strong opening statement. This mid-weight, intensely savory Syrah offers tons of character. The Pride Syrah, from a north-facing parcel, is so distinctive. Give it a bit of air.
