2019 Syrah

An exotic, opulent wine, our 2019 Syrah presents flavors of blackberry coulis, mulberry, Niçoise olive, grilled meat, anise, rose oil, juniper berries and black pepper. The midpalate is layered and thick, with evolving waves of fruit and spice notes, and the finish lingers seamlessly with the right amount of acidity.

In addition to vineyards sourced from cool sites in Sonoma county, this blend features grapes from our newest block, named “Sunset,” a three-acre clearing on the cool-breezed western edge of our property. This block is planted to several clones of syrah and, for the first time on our estate, a few rows of grenache. As we have traditionally done, our Syrah is partially whole-cluster fermented and partially co-fermented with whole cluster viognier grapes to add aromatics and texture.

The 2019 Syrah is bold and intensely aromatic. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from a recently planted north-facing block on the property, which seems to add quite a bit of aromatic pop. Sweet red berry fruit, rose petal, blood orange, mint and a touch of whole cluster savoriness all take shape in the glass. The 2019 is pungent and a bit eccentric, but it also has plenty to offer.
