2023 Sangiovese

The 2023 Sangiovese is the first vintage in which our Quartz Hill block, planted in 2019, dominates the blend, and we could not be more thrilled. The aroma is a complex dance that begins with cherries and baking spice taking center stage before giving way to raspberry and finally citrus, leaving an impression of candied blood orange rinds.  On the first sip, the flavors expand to include rosemary and dried lavender, which are uplifted by the wine’s energetic mouthfeel.  As the fruit and acid melt away, the smooth tannins add length and highlight lingering flavors of tobacco and clove.

This shows aromas of plum skin, dark cherries, dried Tuscan herbs and salt-cured meat. The palate is taut and refined, with fine-boned tannins and mouthwatering acidity, finishing with focus and tension and a lovely mountain feel. A well-made sangiovese. Drink or hold.

They have about an acre of Sangiovese, and as Steve Pride explains, the goal now is to emulate Brunello—making the wine a little less bombastic and more savoury-driven. Winemaker Matt Ward conducts a series of quick, small-lot fermentations to retain colour and vibrancy, working the wine over with pump-overs in large puncheons before bottling after about 13 months. They’re also picking earlier, and the result is bright and fresh, with crunchy red berry fruit, baking spice, and a woodsy character, perhaps with hints of unsmoked tobacco and sagebrush. The finish is mineral-driven and beautifully balanced. Just lovely.

The 2023 Sangiovese is gorgeous. A dollop of Merlot fills out the mid-palate in a wine endowed with tons of varietal character. Sweet red cherry fruit, leather, spice, tobacco and dried herbs flesh out nicely in the glass. What a delight.

Savory red and black fruits, dried herbs, leather, and loamy soil and cedary notes all emerge from the 2023 Sangiovese, a complex, nuanced Sangiovese that shines for its balance and restraint. Based on 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot and aged 10 months in 10% new French oak with the balance in neutral and once-used barrels, it's medium-bodied on the palate, with outstanding length and a pure, layered mouthfeel. It's not over the top and should have a solid decade-plus of longevity. Drink 2026-2038.
