2018 Cabernet Franc

The 2018 Cabernet Franc is a gorgeous expression of this grape that can be challenging in some settings but just excels on our mountaintop. The 2018 is intensely aromatic with ripe red raspberry and currant comingling with blackberry and black mission fig. Graphite, cedar, and bay leaf blend with hibiscus flowers, bergamot citrus, and exotic spices like star anise and Szechuan pepper. The palate has no hard edges,  being rich and caressingly smooth, with a persistent finish that allows the vibrant fruit and spice nuances to linger like a slow-moving sunset.  2018 is a really beautiful Cabernet Franc!

With its expressive fruit, savory intrigue and seamless texture, the 2018 Cabernet Franc balances the elegance and exoticism so characteristic of the 2018 vintage. An essentially perfect growing season culminated in separate picks of our four cabernet franc blocks over a leisurely three-week period between October 15th and November 9th. Wines were aged individually in French oak barrels, 40% new, for just under a year before the blend was assembled and returned to barrel to marry for another seven months.

Updated notes from July 2022:

At release, we noted intensely aromatic ripe raspberry, currant, blackberry, graphite, cedar, bay leaf and star anise. After two additional years in bottle, the red and black fruit remain prominent but floral nuances now permeate the wine that is also remarkable for its classy, satiny finish. This is precisely how we hope our cabernet franc will evolve in bottle.

  • Antonio Galloni Vinous: January 2021 - Rating: 94

The 2018 Cabernet Franc is absolutely delicious. Medium in body, with striking aromatic lift, the 2018 is so rewarding right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, mint, red berry fruit, spice and mocha all grace the 2018. Although not super-complex nor structured, the 2018 Franc is the sort of wine that is opened and disappears in an instant.

  • Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate: November 5th, 2020 - Rating: 91

A blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon coming 59% from Napa County and 41% from Sonoma County, the medium garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Franc comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notions of ripe black and red cherries, mulberries and wild blueberries plus suggestions of pencil shavings, allspice, lavender and bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with refreshing red fruits with herbal accents and a slight, pleasant chewiness to the texture, finishing with a peppery kick.

  • Jeb Dunnuck: Napa Valley's 2018s - Rating: 92+

Coming from 55% in Napa and 45% in Sonoma, the 2018 Cabernet Franc is a pretty, elegant wine that shows the floral, feminine side to this variety nicely. Revealing a medium ruby/purple color as well as perfumed notes of black raspberries, mulberries, spring flowers, candied violets, and spice, it's medium-bodied and has nicely integrated oak, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's not a blockbuster, but it shines for its balance, harmony, and length. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming decade or more.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: April 2021 - Rating: 90

Conveying a very nice, mid-volume mix of cherries, berries, currants and subtle oak sweetness on the nose, this wine backs up its attractive aromatic beginning with very like-minded flavors that, at present, are just a bit held back and compressed by youthful, slightly coarsening tannins. That it will age favorably is beyond any question, but be advised that it is most definitely a wine to be cellared rather than one to bring to the dinner table anytime soon.
