2010 Cabernet Franc

2010 Cabernet Franc

The four blocks of cabernet franc that form this cuvée were harvested on November 5th, 6th and 9th, and the final blend, after fifteen months in barrel, is a charmer. The wine was blended with 12% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon, and, for the first time ever in our cabernet franc, 1% petit verdot to add structure and enhance the mouthfeel. Subtle notes of rose petals and green tea contribute intrigue to a core of raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors that are revealed in waves. 2010 was characterized by a cool wet spring followed by a mild, warm summer and just a smattering of rain in an otherwise temperate fall. Our vineyard crew worked tirelessly to coax full phenological ripeness from our vines in this cooler-than-average vintage through extensive shoot thinning, leaf pulling and fruit thinning. The wine is fresh and lively on the palate, with a lush texture, bright acidity and well-integrated, ripe tannins.

A resonant wine loaded with personality, the 2010 Cabernet Franc shows gorgeous mid-palate density and richness. Tobacco, espresso, mocha and sweet herbs add complexity in this juicy, expressive Cabernet Franc. At the same time, there is plenty of grip and energy on the finish to support years of cellaring. This is another deep, resonant wine loaded with personality. Sweet red berries, flowers and tobacco are layered into the finish. The 2010 is 79% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

($62) (blended with 12% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon and 1% petit verdot):  Bright dark red.  Perfumed aromas of blackberry, licorice, violet, rose petal and dusty herbs.  Very dry but nicely ripe in the mouth, with excellent energy and definition to the flavors of blueberry, currant, brown spices and flowers.  The lively finish features excellent length and dusty, slightly chalky tannins.  Very sophisticated cabernet franc, from grapes harvest during the first half of November.
