2017 Chardonnay

This crisp, elegant beauty is exuberantly aromatic, with notes of lemon curd, honeysuckle, rose oil, kaffir lime, melon, and pear. The palate is bright, with characteristic acidity, viscosity on the mid-palate and a lovely lingering finish.

Our portfolio has long included two chardonnays: our “Chardonnay”, traditionally made from fruit sourced from the southern end of the Napa Valley, and our “Vintner Select Chardonnay”, sourced from our estate vineyards on the Sonoma side of our property.  Beginning with the 2017 vintage, in pursuit of the best chardonnay fruit we can discover, we are including into our Napa Chardonnay two new vineyard sources located in Sonoma County.  As a result, the Chardonnay being offered to you in this release is now labeled with the percentage of grapes sourced in each county. There has been no increase in production, but as we sought a replacement for a Napa Valley vineyard that was starting to show its age, the quality of two vineyards located in Sonoma County was impossible to resist.  We love the fresh, vivacious character that these fruit sources contribute to our cuvée.  Winemaking has remained consistent, with fermentation in French oak barrels, 20% new, and malolactic fermentation at a level of 30%. Weekly lees stirring was done for much of the seven-month elevage to add roundness to the palate.

This is a hearty, robustly styled wine, dark in color and profile. It shows flavors of burnt sugar, pineapple and toasted vanilla oak, rounding the concentrated leanings with a persistent thread of acidity that helps to refresh. VIRGINIE BOONE
