Kathy Bertolino's early childhood memories include being surrounded by her father's Italian-American family eating delicious food, drinking wine and having a grand old time. Her grandfather made wine in the basement of his New Jersey home from grapes shipped from California. Kathy and her sister remember hours spent riding their wine barrel "horses" in Nonno's wine cellar. Who would have guessed she would be working at a winery in California today?
After graduating from Pennsylvania's Lafayette College with a degree in Economics and Business (accounting emphasis), Kathy married into a family of innkeepers on the coast of Maine. It was there she first learned about business - finances, marketing, hospitality, staffing, reservations, housekeeping, running a restaurant...and whatever else was required during those busy summer seasons. Winters were spent driving cross-country to Napa Valley and exploring the wine country.
Kathy became a CPA and worked for CPA firms coast-to-coast in between. She moved to Napa Valley permanently in 1994 and returned to her job with a CPA firm in St. Helena, where Pride Mountain Vineyards eventually became her responsibility. In 1999, Kathy was ready for a change and Jim and Carolyn Pride offered her a job she simply couldn't refuse.
"Working so closely with Jim on a business level for five years was always educational, motivational and exhilarating. I will treasure those days. And from day one at Pride Mountain Vineyards, Carolyn has promised me "no dull days", which certainly has been the case. All of us who work here are so fortunate that Suzanne and Steve have taken this great business into the next generation. It is a true pleasure to be working with this extraordinary family and our wonderful staff."
In 2001 Kathy married a local boy, Richard Chesi, himself part of a winemaking team at another Napa Valley winery. Without pets or children, they enjoy a simple life together of food and wine, family, friendships, travel, gardening, occasional golf and hard work.
