2000 Cabernet Franc

As Thom Elkjer of Wine & Spirits Magazine said of our 1999 Cab Franc, “If more Cab Franc tasted like this, Merlot would be in trouble.” While long known to Francophiles as an essential element in Bordeaux blends, we have been delighted with the sub-following that our estate grown Cabernet Franc has developed as a varietal wine among our mailing list customers. The perennial sweetheart among our spring wines, it is hands down our Cab Franc that breaks the most hearts when it sells out. One of the last vineyards to ripen in 2000, this vintage has once again given us true reward for our patience. In the glass, a rush of summer-ripe blackberry and blueberry aromas assault your nose (think berry picking on a hot summer day when you were a kid) graced with a sliver of tea-like nuance and toasty oak. On the palate, a mouthful of fruit as big as all outdoors follows through, harmoniously balanced with a bit of tobacco and resolved with gentle finishing tannins. Rich and lush, this wine is accessible enough to be enjoyed as a young wine or savored after several years of ageing.

Black in tone, the ripe, black cherry flavors of this wine are perfumed by the char of the new oak in which it aged, rounded by its time in oak to a plush feel. The texture is luxurious, while the flavors remain simple and blunt for now. It's a big, giving red from the top of Spring Mountain.

It's easy to make Cab Franc tasty almost anywhere, but difficult to make it great. Pride succeeds in the later with mountain grapes that have concentrated flavors. Lush, opulent blackberry fruit is exquisitely offset by rich oak and dusty tannins. The texture is fabulous, at once light and dense. Cellar Selection.
